The European
Parliament, which is located in the Wiertzstraat in Brussels,
has enormous window panes that ensure pleasant incoming light.
However, large window panes also mean room temperatures
reaching high levels at times. After having launched a
European invitation to tender for installing glass foils, the
European Parliament ended up choosing Luxafoil NV/SA in
Sint-Niklaas. Luxafoil NV/SA is the European market leader in
high-tech spectrally selective glass foils that fit in with an
overall concept of energy saving and CO2 emission reduction,
in combination with the provision of the comfort of advice,
installation and a long term guarantee on the result.
Luxafoil NV/SA showed to be the only producer/supplier that
could comply with all conditions put forward.
The European Parliament is a gigantic transnational
institution that accommodates over 700 members of parliament
and almost 6000 staff members.
Inevitably, the consumption of energy in the Parliament is
quite high. Technical innovations and green solutions help to
drastically reduce energy consumption.
The European Parliament is attempting to put into practice
what it is propagating by consuming less energy and by
emitting less CO2, and is aiming at a reduction of its carbon
footprint by 30% by 2020.
The Luxasolar® Clear View glass foil ensures a reflection of
93% of the sun heat, as a result of which room temperatures
are decreased by 10°C. It is a widely known phenomenon that
buildings with huge glass panes have to be air-conditioned 9
months per year.
Luxasolar® Clear View glass foils are composed of 5 corrosion
free layers of precious metal alloys and a protective coating.
Each of those layers reflects a specific frequence in the sun
light, without the quality of the light being affected.
As the air conditioning system has to operate considerably
less, this results in huge savings in energy costs. After
installation of Luxasolar® up to 33% can be saved in airco
consumption.
In winter time the foil reflects the interior heat that
usually goes lost through large glass panes, back into the
room. Thermal insulation is considerably improved, as a result
of which savings of up to 30% can be achieved on fuel costs.
This allows temperatures to increase by 2 to 4°C. This is why
the foil is also installed on the northern side of a building.
The foil is affixed to the inner side of the window, but the
clear view is totally preserved.
Installation of Luxasolar® not only leads to energy cuts of
30% both in summer and in winter time, but also to a huge
reduction of CO2-emissions that are responsible for the
massive discharge of greenhouse gases. Owing to the continued
increase of fuel prices, the time span of the guaranteed
‘Return on Investment' keeps getting less than 2 to 3 years.
